The Alzheimer’s Association reports that more than 5 million Americans currently live with Alzheimer’s disease. The sixth leading cause of death in the United States, Alzheimer’s and related dementias are expected to cost the country approximately $259 billion in 2017. Currently, one in three seniors in America dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, and someone in the U.S. develops the disease every 66 seconds. Sadly, deaths from Alzheimer’s disease have increased by 89% since 2007, while deaths from heart disease have decreased by 14%. More than 15 million Americans now provide unpaid care for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients, and those caregivers provided approximately 18.2 billion hours of care worth more than $230 billion in 2016.
Clearly, people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, their family members, and their caregivers need support in dealing with the disease and its effects. And, hospitals, counselors, mental health agencies, and other experts in aging and Alzheimer’s and dementia recognize this need. That’s why they offer regular support groups. Attendees benefit not only by learning from group leaders but also by spending time with others who understand their challenges, fears, and hopes.
We have selected 50 of the top Alzheimer’s support groups in Massachusetts so that you can spend more time attending one than searching for one yourself. We have included support groups that are organized, meet consistently, and are led by experienced medical professionals, social workers, and counselors who deliver just the right information and create a safe, supportive environment for attendees.
